DEADLAND

[Some time after your character dies, they will wake up in their bunk in camp. But something is wrong here, so very wrong.

Venture outside, and you will see that you're still in camp, but it's trapped in a foggy twilight. Time doesn't seem to pass, and it's quiet. Too quiet. No animals, no breeze, nothing.

The only sign of anything living is in the trees, where dozens and dozens of ghostly figures roam. Sometimes they might come into camp, but you'll probably have to go out to meet them if you want to talk to them. They all seem to be watching camp, but are shy and might flicker away if they're approached.

Finally, in the chapel in the lodge, there is a shadowy figure. It looks like a preteen, perhaps? Maybe 11 or 12 or so. But that's about all you can get from it at a glance.

But you're here now, and there are things to do. Where will you start?

[Tal laughs a little at that, too. Quiet is definitely not Lance's strong point but that doesn't matter because they can talk all they want here while they're flying alongside the birds.

After a moment he gasps, sharp and excited, reaching out to grab at Lance's wrist without thinking about it.]

There! By the pavilion. Barn owls. [Just gonna hop along for a ride.]

[The touch makes Lance lose focus for a moment, then headshakes at his own distractibility.]

Mm, I'm with you.

[Kind of. The barn owls are there in his mind's eye, just like his body used to be. This is different though, before when he tried to take control over his zombie it'd been all done out of a sense of urgency. A kind of desperation. The owls are different. Exciting and trying this out with Tal is inexplicably warm. He's so glad they're doing this.

As Sol said, the animals are easier to control somehow. Keeping his eyes closed, he focuses on the world around them as the owl sees it and nudges Tal's owl with a wing.

[It's very different from focusing on their own bodies, feeling out the way the birds work differently from what they used to. Being able to just slip into the owl and float along with it is a little disorienting which only leads Tal to slide his hand down, tangling his fingers with Lance's anchoring himself to the here, even while letting go and immersing himself in the owl's senses.

Sight is so diferent, muted colors but hyper focused in a way that makes his breath catch. Then Lance is nudging him and he lets out a short cry, something affronted as he hops down along the beam they're perched on. He turns to look at Lance's owl, tilts his head and sways on his feet when it makes the world shift way more than intended.

Maybe they should've sat down first? He grips Lance's hand a little tighter and then stretches out his wings as far as they can go, getting a feel for the size of the bird.]

Whoa

Tal is holding his hand, and Lance holds right back. Sitting down would've probably been the smartest idea, but standing like this doesn't feel bad either. What's proving to be difficult though, is not mimicking the movements of the owl with his own soul-body. His arm moves slightly as he examines his owl's wings.]

Ah sorry.

[He murmurs the apology when their clasped hands brush against Tal's side, and then Lance holds himself steady again. Experimentally he lifts one of the owls feet, opening and closing its sharp talons. Turning to face the other ow, he hoots first and then--

Laughter. Right, he can't talk in the owl's body. This is going to get confusing, isn't it?

This is so cool.

[Lance laughs and so does Tal, blinking over at him for a moment, grinning so hard it hurts. It's a little bit dizzying, looking at Lance and also looking at the other owl through the bird's eyes. His laugh turns into a funny little whine and he snaps his eyes closed again, stumbling closer to Lance, leaning against his shoulder.]

We should sit.... before we fly.

[Honestly if they take off before they sit down Tal's pretty sure he'll fall over. So he tugs at Lance's hand, dropping right down to sit in the grass where they are. Only once he has solid ground under him does he return his focus to the owl, bobbing along the beam, getting the hang of dropping onto such a narrow surface and gripping on with his talons. It'd suck to go soaring and then fumble the landing so for a moment he's content hopping back and forth, probably looking completely foolish but there's no one around to call him on it but Lance.]
